italy | civita di bagnoregio

Civita di Bagnoregio is situated in Italy's Viterbo region, around 140km north of Rome.  Perched atop a small plateau of volcanic tufa that rises from the surrounding countryside, this traffic-free town is accessible only by a long pedestrian bridge and is often called il paese che muore (the dying village) due to the fact that in winter, its population of permanent residents dwindles to less than 20.  There isn't an awful lot to do there, but it's so beautiful, peaceful and photogenic that you quite possibly will not care one bit, especially as you wander through its small streets lined with stone houses that are decorated with jasmine and pots of colourful geraniums and realise that all you can hear is the sound of your own footsteps and the wind rushing through the plains below.  Sigh!

  5. Such a lovely village and it surely looks peaceful. I'd love to see Umbria...if I go to Rome later on this year I might combine with some time in the countryside or by the sea. Any recommendations? ;D Have a lovely up-coming weekend! xo

Ps. LOVE your Italy-posts. Do you have more to come, please! :)

  6. Oh, my, what a beautiful description, in words and images, of this enchanting place. It sounds just ideal to really get away from it all. I can't quite imagine not hearing anything but your own footsteps. Gorgeous, dream photos – and the cats! The perfect touch.

  10. Beautiful - I'd love to visit. Italy is definitely high on my list of destinations and rural Italy has just as much appeal to me as the more obvious destinations. The older I get the more I value this kind of complete peace - this reminds me so much of little villages in the Dordogne where all you can hear is the rustle of a gentle breeze. Soul replenishing....

I would love to follow your blog but am unable to locate the follow button - it is probably staring at me but I have scrolled back and forth to no avail
