Yesterday, D and I went into the city to take some photos and look for shoes (for yours truly) as I need a replacement pair of black ballet flats. No luck on the shoe front (my size was all out), but I did get to photograph two of my favourite buildings in Sydney - the Queen Victoria Building and the Strand Arcade.
Today has been fairly low key, and tonight we might try to finalise our travel plans as our trip is coming up soon, hooray! That is, assuming that we don't get sidetracked by watching the 'lympics (as I like to say for no reason at all) again. Earlier this week, Lisbon was thrown into the mix after I saw a photo on Pinterest (!) - has anyone been? Yay or nay? I have to say, it looks very photogenic, which is always a major consideration for me. I also started reading Fifty Shades of Grey, which I have been in two minds about, but a work colleague gave me her copy on Friday, all raving and insistent that I read it. So I am, because I kind of feel as though I have to now that she has given it to me. But I don't know ... the protagonist thinks "damn," "crap," "double crap," "holy crap" (so much crap!) and "oh my ..." so frequently that it's kinda comical. Admittedly, I haven't reached any of the apparently good bits (D seems to be vaguely concerned that I am going to want to tie him up in our nonexistent basement when I am done reading), but whatever, we shall see. I suppose that at least this way I will know what everybody is going on and on (and on) about ...
Anyway, photos!

Your photos are absolutely beautiful, I love the tones. That little candlelit bar in the last couple of shots looks so lovely. I gave in to curiosity and have read 50 Shades of Grey too! I'm afraid to say that I also found the writing terrible, the plot lines thin and the whole thing very repetitive. The amount of lip biting, eye rolling and exclamations of 'oh my' really grated on me! But I still couldn't stop reading, which says a lot for the book. I've thought a lot about it, and my current theory is that despite the fact that the writing is so bad the author still has the ability to make us feel something as we read her story. I think it's what we crave in any form of entertainment, from music to art, if it makes us feel something strongly then we enjoy the connection. And in this case the book can remind us of what it's like being in love and feeling that strong, vibrant connection to another human being - basically falling head over heels for someone! It's nice to feel that, so it might be understandable that so many people have enjoyed reading it. That's my current theory anyway, I might have gotten it totally wrong lol, but one way or another the author is doing well!
ReplyDeletegorgeous photos.
ReplyDeletesadly I have no knowledge of Lisbon to offer, but photogenic is always good :)
Oh, Fifty Shades of Grey. Apparently, the author is making something insane like a million pounds a day. Also, apparently she has two teenage sons who I imagine must be absolutely mortified by the fact their mother wrote an erotic best-seller. Anyway, I downloaded it a couple of months ago and read up to the bit where she trips into his office and I had to put it down. I checked reviews on Goodreads to make sure I wasn't being too Judgey Judgerson about it and saw that one of my friends had linked to this review and I laughed and laughed and laughed and vowed to never read it (http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/340740106). But, you know, each to their own and all that. I'm happy so many people have found a series of books to love (or love to hate).
ReplyDeleteAlso, that dress with the tulle tutu-looking skirt in your picture?! Could you imagine wearing that somewhere? I'd buy it just to wear around the house - if I could afford it which I've no doubt I could not.
Oh Annelise, that review had me in tears (and D completely horrified. He pulled her tampon out and threw it away??? Good Lord).
DeleteLove your blog and your pics are beautiful. The Strand is such an amazing building. Always pop in for a visit when we'e in Sydney. By the way, I think I'd die of embarrassment reading that book ;) How is it so far? Your reply, above, gives me a hint! Yikes.
ReplyDeleteJanis, having read a little more, it's actually not *too* bad, and certainly not quite as bad as I expected (although that being said, I have yet to reach the abovementioned ... um, scene). I don't love the writing, but then I don't think that these books are about the writing, heheh.
DeleteYour photography is amazing, and I just went through your posts...all lovely. Now I am your 80th follower!!! :)
ReplyDeleteHi Taylor! Thanks so much for following. I just quickly checked out your blog(s) and am already a fan :)
DeleteI might need to go to Australia soon, love your pictures from Sydney! :D I've heard Lisabon is supposed to be really cool and beautiful. Which other stops have you planned? :) I actually booked tickets for going to Rome in a few months. I can't wait. I've been travelling a lot in Italy but have never visited Rome. Any tips? ;) xo
ReplyDeleteKarin, so far we definitely have Brugge, Paris and Munich ... possibly Venice and Verona ... and then we are deciding between Lisbon and Lyon (bit of a difference, I know!). I think that we will probably wind up going to Lyon and saving Lisbon for another time. As for Rome - let me go through my notes and send you something :) It's so beautiful!
Deletewow! I'm a Sydney girl and you have photographed these amazing buildings so wonderfully! I think next time i walk through the strand i will definitely have to stop and stare for a lil' while.
ReplyDeleteps: The QVB high tea rooms are divine! A must see for anyone visiting Sydney :)
